Building a first model

Prapoorna Children's Club

In 2005, Pushpavalli founded Prapoorna Children's Club, an after school activity centre. It was the first institution she created to put her developing learning philosophy into daily practice, bringing traditional methods together with children's school subjects.

What this stage taught her

Core insight.

The club raised a larger question: if she was seeing these changes during a short after school session, what might become possible when the same principles were integrated into a full school curriculum? That question led her towards mainstream school leadership.

Practice and learning

Inside this chapter.

A rhythm for each evening

Children attended for two hours each evening. The first 45 minutes were devoted to chanting, yoga, and meditation; the remaining time was spent on academic work. The rhythm of the sessions made these practices part of a regular routine, rather than an occasional addition to lessons.

Readiness to learn

She describes children focusing more readily, retaining information more easily, and approaching their studies with less anxiety after the opening practices. These observations encouraged her to explore the relationship between a child's readiness to learn and the way a session is organised.
